A beautiful city in the northern part of the country, Chiang Mai is the largest city ibn northern Thailand, 700 km north of Bangkok in a mountainous area. Chiang Mai, meaning "new city", was founded in 1296 as the new capital, succeding the former capital, Chiang Rai.

Wat Doi Suthep (Wat Pra That Doi Suthep) is 15 km from Chiang Mai. Doi Suthep is the name of the mountain where this temple is located.
