Pigs

Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius)

Out of Water In Water Yawning From the boat

The hippo is the biggest member of the pig family. It can sunburn, so it spends days in the water, often covering itself with mud. It comes out at night to feed.

More people are killed by hippos than just about any other animal in Tanzania. They are bad-tempered. It is not a good idea to be between a hippo and the water.

We saw a hippo out of water early in the morning in Ngorongoro Crater. We took a few shots using high-speed film before continuing on our way to see the Rhinos. In the Selous we saw hippos out during the day and photographed them from a boat.

Warthog (Phacochoerus africanus)

Male Female With piglets running

Warthogs usually ran away when we approached but once in a while they cooperated for a few seconds. When they run, they hold their tails in the air.
