North Slope Tundra

Tundra flowers all in bloom, first week of July. The high winds kept the mosquitoes at bay. The Alaska poppy, Papaver radicatum alaskanum, has a parabolic flower that follows the sun, focusing the heat at the base of the flower and keeping it a few degrees warmer than the ambient temperature.
