Whittier and Prince William Sound
Whittier is 58 miles southeast of Anchorage and has a populatiom of about 214 people. It is a port of the Alaska Marine Highway and is at the head of the Passage Canal. The Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel (Whittier Tunnel or Portage Tunnel) allows access to Whittier by car. The town has a subarctic climate.
We cruised Prince William Sound to the tidewater Surprise Glacier in Barry Arm, passing waterfalls and wildlife. Prince William Sound is a sound in the Gulf of Alaska on the east side of the Kenai Peninsula. Its largest port is Valdez, the southern terminus of the Trans-Alaskan Pipeline. It is named for King George III's son Prince William Henry. The sound has more than 3800 miles of coastline.
