Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1944 to provide habitat for migrating birds, particularly piping plovers and roseate terns, and also has the second largest nesting colony of common terns on the Atlantic seaboard.
April 5, 2010: Cape Cod and Monomoy Island seal colony. Pilot: Devan Wiebe. Photographer: Charlotte. Lenses: 10.5mm f2.8, 24-70mm f2.8.
11 September 2010: Another aerial photography flight over Monomoy Island and the seal breeding colony island of Muskegut, the westernmost of the two islands that lie between Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard. Charlotte flew this flight herself as an instructional cross-country flight out of Boire Field in Nashua, NH, with Troy DiGiovanni as CFI. Troy handled the controls during the photography runs, and Charlotte landed at Chatham to make the flight count. Same camera equipment as before with the addition of an 80-200 f2.8 and 12-24 f4, and same Cessna 172 as the previous photo flight, but this time we were hoping to see great white sharks off the seal colony. No such luck, but it was a good time anyway. Visibility was very good, and the mid-day timing allowed for good light penetration into the sea, highlighting the beautiful sand channels off the western shore of Monomoy Island.
14 June 2015: aerial photography of the island with Mike Roman and Jerry Muller.
