Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, a former cattle ranch, is a private non-profit sanctuary formed to reintroduce southern white rhinos, Ceratotherium simum simum, in the wild to Uganda. Both black (Diceros bicornis) and northern white rhinos (Ceratotherium simum cottoni) were native to Uganda originally. Northern white rhinos are now functionally extinct. As the population of southern white rhinos in the sanctuary grows large enough, plans are to reintroduce them into national parks that once had northern white rhino populations, probably starting with Murchison Falls National Park. Currently Ziwa is the only place in Uganda to see rhinos in more-or-less wild conditions.
The sanctuary also has around twenty other large mammal species and more than 300 bird species.
