Goatfish have a pair of chin barbels which contain chemosensory organs used to probe sand or holes in the reef for food. They feed on worms, crustaceans, molluscs, and other small invertebrates. Goatfish can change color.

Freckled (Baar-tail) goatfish, Upeneus tragula, can rapidly change color to white with a dark mid-lateral stripe when swimming
