The museum has collections of weapons, sculptures, paintings, textiles, musical instruments, and theatrical masks. It was built in 1931 near the location of the Denpasar royal palace, which burnt to the ground during the Dutch intervention on Bali in 1906, and the museum is modeled after the palace. It is a popular location for pre-wedding photography.
