The Vkings established the world's first democratic parliament, the Althingi, here in AD 930. The park is a fissure rift valley between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates in southwestern Iceland. The Thingvallakirkja is one of Iceland's first churches. It was originally built in the 11th century. The current building was built in 1859.
