Hvitserkur Rock Formations

This 15m basalt sea stack is on the Vatnsnes Peninsula's east coast in Northwest Iceland. It is a volcanic basaltic plug. According to legend it was a troll caught by sunlight while attempting to destroy the monastery at Thingeyrar. The base of the sea stack has been reinforced with concrete to prevent collapse. Several bird species nest on the rock, producing the white guano streaks.
