At the southern entrance to Jokulsarglufar (Vatnajokull National Park), Dettifoss is one of Europe's largest waterfalls. The waterfall is 45m high and has the greatest water volume of any waterfall in Europe. The national park protects the Vatnajokull Ice Cap.
