Varna, a naval and commercial port on the Black Sea, is Bulgaria's third-largest city.

The Varna Archeological Museum is housed in the former girls' high school and has more than 100,000 objects on display. The earliest are from the Paleolithic, Mesolithic, and Neolithic settlements.The oldest worked gold treaure in the world was discovered in 1972 in the Second Varna Necropolis along with other Chalcolithic (Copper Age) objects and dated to 4600-4200 BCE. The collections has exhibits dating from the Early Stone Age to the Late Middle Ages.

Later, Iron Age Thracians, Scythians, and Celts, as well as Hellenes (Greeks) settled along the Black Sea Coast at Odessos in the second quarter of the 6th century BCE.

The Dormition of the Mother of God Cathedral (Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin) dates from the 19th century.
