The Saint Archangel Michael (Ivanovo) rock monastery was built in the 14th century in limestone caves along the Rusenski Lom River in what is now Rusenski Lom Nature Park. There are six complexes in the area dating from the early 13th to 14th centuries during the Second Bulgarian Kingdom.
There are beautiful frescoes in the chapel of the Virgin Mary (Holy Mother of God Temple), a Unesco World Heritage site). There were originally around such 40 churches.
