Patagonia Photo Gallery: Mammals

We visited Chilean Patagonia in November-December of 2023.

The gunanaco, Lama guanicoe, is a camelid closely related to the llama. Young guanacos are called chulengos. They can live as long as 28 years.

The fox-like Culpeo, Lycalopex culpaeus, is more closely related to the wolf. They are found in forested areas.

The southern grey fox, Lycalopex griseus, is also more closely related to wolves than to foxes. They are found in steppe grasslands.

The puma, Puma concolor concolor, is the main predator.

The muskrat, Ondatra zibethicus, is an introduced species.

The European hare, Lepus europaeus, is a common introduced species.
